1. Understanding Business Card Paper Stock & GSM
The foundation of any memorable business card is its substrate weight. Paper weight is measured in GSM (Grams per Square Meter). In commercial offset printing, card weight directly dictates tactile stiffness, durability against edge-fraying in wallets, and the board's capacity to hold heavy post-press finishes:
| Board GSM | Substrate Type | Feel & Rigidity | Best Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|
| 250–300 GSM | Domestic Art Card | Flexible, prone to creasing | Economy retail cards, temporary passes |
| 350 GSM | Imported Virgin Board | Sturdy, firm, crisp snap | Standard corporate business cards |
| 400 GSM | Ultra-Thick Ivory Board | Rigid, zero wallet bending | Executive, Director & Luxury brand cards |
| 350 GSM Kraft | Unbleached Natural Kraft | Earth-toned, organic texture | Eco-friendly brands, cafes, architects |
2. Premium Finishes: Velvet Matte, Spot UV & Foil Stamping
Commercial offset printing enables specialized post-press enhancements that toner-based digital copiers cannot reproduce. Here are the most effective finishes available at our Jaipur plant:
A. Velvet / Soft-Touch Matte Lamination
Unlike regular plastic matte lamination, velvet lamination bonds a velvety micro-polymer film to the printed sheet. It provides an immediate tactile sensation of luxury resembling suede or soft peach skin, while eliminating glare and providing anti-fingerprint properties.
B. Raised Spot UV (3D Tactile Gloss)
Spot UV applies a clear, ultra-glossy polymer coating selectively over logos, monograms, or executive typography. When paired against a velvet matte background, the dramatic contrast between light-absorbing matte and light-reflecting gloss creates an immediate sensory impact. Raised Spot UV adds a tangible relief dimension that can be felt by fingertip touch.
C. Metallic Hot Foil Stamping
A heated brass or magnesium die transfers metallic pigment foil under hydraulic pressure into the paperboard. We provide:
- Gold Foil: Classic luxury for jewelry manufacturers, legal firms, and corporate consultancies.
- Silver Foil: Crisp, contemporary look preferred by technology, architectural, and engineering businesses.
- Rose Gold & Copper Foil: Boutique aesthetic popular with interior designers, fashion labels, and creative agencies.
3. Pre-Press Setup: Dimensions, Bleed & Color Profiles
To avoid blurry typography or borders being trimmed unevenly, ensure your graphic designer adheres to these exact pre-press specifications:
- Trim Size: 89 mm × 54 mm (Standard Indian business card).
- Bleed Dimensions: 95 mm × 60 mm (3 mm exterior bleed on all 4 sides).
- Safety Margin: Keep all text, phone numbers, and icons at least 3.5 mm inside the cut line.
- Color Mode: Native CMYK (FOGRA39 or US Web Coated SWOP). Never export in RGB.
- Resolution: 300 DPI or vector outlines (.AI, .CDR, or PDF/X-1a).
4. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using 250 GSM paper for B2B cards: Cheap paper stock creases immediately in wallets, projecting poor brand credibility.
- Placing text right at the edge: Guillotine cutting machines have a mechanical tolerance of ±1 mm. Text too close to the edge risks being partially cut off.
- Submitting artwork in RGB: Neon monitor colors will darken considerably when converted to CMYK offset inks during plate imaging.
